New Inspiration/Old Canvas – Part I
I think I’ve been watching the videos on Dale Chihuly’s site a little too much (teaser for what I am planning for this piece). I found an old canvas featuring a painting I never finished and lost the motivation for and thought I would revamp it and see what I could do with it.
So first of all, the chore was to dig the thing out of the closet. Hidden under years of junk that have piled up, the canvas had several dents in it. Those won’t matter much though for what I am going to do with this.
I figured for October, I’d just start with the basic color: Orange
Now since I have it laying around, I used some spray paint actually to get this type of vibrant field of orange, and it’s a windy day here in central Ohio, so I figure it will dry quickly as long as it doesn’t blow off the porch.

William,
This is something I do fairly often, start a new painting over one that I lost enthusiasm for somewhere along the way. It usually ends up better than the original idea would have been, and it adds to the texture that I love to include in my pieces. I also like how you decided on what color to start with – often the hardest decision to make.:)
Thank you for your comments on my blog – and yes, feel free to link. I’ll do the same.
Hey, thanks for the quick response on linking by the way. As for the color, it’s Friday the 13th in October or I guess maybe I’ve seen too many pumpkins lately. Fall inspired. My favorite season due to the colors.
Hello, From one artist to another I can certainly appreciate how a certain piece of work, project, or any form of artistic expression can begin with much zeal and excitement and end up in the closet or (on the shelf in my case, as I write songs).
I feel that it is perhaps common to many artists who truly want their work to be driven by inspiration rather than forcing the hand to do something. Inpiration comes to me in waves and occasionally there is down time as I wait for the next wave of creative, inspired, expression to come crashing in on me. It is certainly a process.
I will be watching the progress on your orange, autumn painting.
Yes, I’m all eager to know what will happen to this blank orange canvas now.
