Welcome, RSS, and submissions…

It has been a few weeks since this blog started and I just wanted to welcome a few of our newer readers, let you know that the feeds are now active, and tell you that I want to see your art too.
It’s great that you can come and see my art and take part in the projects that we occasionally do, but Artist Hideout is also about you, your art and the larger art community in general. If you have read any art journals or magazines that come across like Art is all about critique and philosophizing what …read more

Chewing Pencils Contest Entry

Chewing Pencils Contest Entry

Matt Glover over at Chewing Pencils has a Christmas Cartoon Contest going on. I figured I would join the fun and get my entry in too. Apparently, Darren Rowse from Problogger and b5media will be the judge.
Cartooning isn’t my specialty but I thought I would give it a shot, so here is my entry into the contest. I also bought the domain name for www.santablogging.com since I used it here… if anyone is interested, let me know.
I just wanted to make sure no one bought it and made it into a porn site while I posted this entry. …read more

Exploring the Ebay Artists

Exploring the Ebay Artists

It’s funny when I go into galleries around town to see that most of the paintings I see are not selling very well. It may be just our local art community, or it could be something that reflects the economics of our particular area. I am in the process of trying to raise a little revenue to build my studio materials up and thought I would try to sell one of my own pieces. But while researching places to sell my work, ebay seemed like an option to at least try once.
So here it is. …read more

A Local Artist – Tessa Warner

A Local Artist – Tessa Warner

Recently, I have began a journey to learn more about local artists right here in my hometown. It’s amazing to me how many there are when you look for them. Today I visited Tessa Warner who teaches Art Classes locally as well as sells her paintings. Before today, I didn’t know Tessa… I only knew that there was some kind of Art place in the old mall. She was gracious enough to invite me into her studio and share a little about her artwork and herself.
Tessa describes herself as a local Art hermit. She paints …read more

Art of the Ancients

Art of the Ancients

I am fortunate to have these mounds here in my hometown in Newark, OH. There have been debates and articles about these mounds since I can remember. I’ve played on them as a kid (before they put up the “keep off the mounds” signs) and most of the time I just drive by them without giving them a second glance now. They are here, but I rarely visit them anymore. I decided to remedy that today.
The Newark Earthworks is a series of mounds built by the Hopewell Indians about 2000 years ago. It’s strange to walk around something that was …read more

Celtic Music and Art

Celtic Music and Art

I tend to like to listen to music when I work on about anything. This includes doing any kind of art. I recently was pointed in the direction of a certain podcast that is usually released about every two weeks. It is entitled simply “The Celtic Music Podcast“.
While listening to Celtic music is fun and reminds me of those times at the Renaissance Festival this last fall, there is some incredible artwork that is also represented by the Celtic culture. An obvious example is the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels. …read more

Artists and Cats

Artists and Cats

Okay, maybe it’s a bias or some other type of thing, but it seems to me that most people who claim the title artist also own cats or are at least animal lovers. Most, not all. Why? Well here are a few reasons.
Cats are individual.
I have two cats. Keena and Elijah. Elijah is two years old, and Keena is about 6 months. They play, they romp, and sometimes can drive me nuts actually. Elijah is very docile and likes his private space, but is more prone to crawl up on your lap while you are watching a movie or sleep …read more

Art Montage

Art Montage

I was looking at Stock Exchange today for some images for this Sunday’s presentation for the worship service. I was just amazed at some of the photographers and artists who upload stuff there and allow it to be used for free. This is a great resource for any blogger or graphic artist. From slideshows to web graphics, this is probably one of the best sites out there. So I put together a montage of things that just caught my eye, or were just art related. Enjoy!

Man in a Craft Shop

Man in a Craft Shop

I’ve been going around to local craft and art shops lately, seeing what is there and getting the standard look from craft shop people. You know that look that says “Ummm… Best Buy is two streets over!” or the one that says “Quick, hide the cash, that guy looks suspicious!”. I’m the guy with the ponytail, goatee and leather coat walking in the craft shop looking at all the country art and craft stuff. I don’t mind it though, I think it’s kinda fun. Especially when I start asking about the painted saw blades or when they see me from …read more

Body Art – Prepost ideas

Body Art – Prepost ideas

Here in the next day or two I’m going to hit some of the many tattoo shops in the area. This is a very different type of art that is often overlooked by those in the art field. Part medicine, part art, part subculture… I’m sure that this is going to be interesting.
So what I am curious about is what you want to know about tattoos, their art and design elements?
If there are any other questions you want me to ask, please just leave me a comment.
