Happy Feet – A Little Fuzzy Artistic Film Review

Happy Feet – A Little Fuzzy Artistic Film Review

Now, I love animated movies and I love animals so in January when I caught a glimpse of a dancing Penguin I marked it on my calendar as date night with my wife. (She loves the same kinds of movies by the way.)
I came away from this movie thinking “I didn’t know you could do so much with white & blue and black, white penguins” This movie was stunning from a visual perspective and definitely one I’ll pick up when it comes out on DVD.
Of course there was the rhythm element to the movie and I’m also a hand percussionist/drummer …read more

Empty Easel and Art Blogs

Empty Easel and Art Blogs

Dan from over at Empty Easel emailed me last night (or early this morning) to share the launch of Empty Easel. I thought this was a great blog and looks to be a great daily read. Thanks Dan.

While Art blogs are fairly new to the blogosphere, they have been popping up a lot more recently. Like here here and over here too. It’s great to see the culture that art blogs are bringing to the art community and the blogosphere (couldn’t we have come up with a better name for it?). Right now I think we classify as some kind …read more

Laptop is in the mail somewhere. Rambling thoughts.

Laptop is in the mail somewhere. Rambling thoughts.

If you are anything like me, which I pity you if you are, then going without your laptop is a pain. Then you get paranoid asking questions like “what if they lose it?” or “what if it comes back more broken than it was to begin with?”
My laptop is the only computer I keep at home. The other computer that I am using now is the one at the church where I work. (Fun combination by the way. Artist, Blogger, Pastor, Web Developer. Hmmm I listed that aphabetically without really thinking about it. Cool.) So anyway,
This may give me some …read more

Critique vs. Compliments – Quieting the voices.

Critique vs. Compliments – Quieting the voices.

I don’t take compliments very well. I think it’s the fact that I’m a perfectionist. If someone tells me that they like something I’ve painted, I blow it off and point out all the flaws. Maybe I just need to learn to shut my mouth and not say anything.
Granted, if someone critiques my work and says that they hate it… I’d defend it tooth and nail and ultimately decide I don’t care what they think.
(Okay I need to turn of the phone… 3 phone calls since I started this entry)
As artists, we can get really picky about what we do, …read more

Horn of Plenty

Horn of Plenty

I’m not the greatest with pastels but if this blog isn’t about getting out of your comfort zone and playing a little, then … well it is, so nevermind.
Otherwise known as the “Cornucopia” this symbol of plenty comes from Greek mythology.
Wikipedia has this to say about it:

The cornucopia (Latin Cornu Copiae), also known as the Horn of Plenty or Harvest Cone, is a symbol of food and plenty dating back to the 5th century BC.
In Greek mythology, Amalthea raised Zeus on the milk of a goat. In return Zeus gave Amalthea the goat’s horn. It had the power …read more

Lomograph #1 and introducing Lomography

Lomograph #1 and introducing Lomography

Lomography (according to www.lomography.com) is:

Following the 10 golden rules of Lomography , lomographers shoot as many impossible pictures as possible in the most impossible of situations from the most impossible of positions.

Though for the sake of this site, Lomography and these seemingly random images will help inspire you to create your own unique art.

Magical Dust cures Artist Block

Magical Dust cures Artist Block

Past projects, photographs and archives (and all dusty stuff) can really come in handy for developing new ideas and dealing with that Artist Block. Artist Block is like Writers block, but for artists…
I get it quite often. Though writers block is fairly easy for me to conquer, there is something about a new sheet of blank paper or canvas that can paralyze me. I’d almost rather splash a little paint on all my work right before I start so that I’m working with something that can’t be “messed up”.

I took this picture this last summer went I went to the …read more

Starving Artists, Warhol and Soup

Starving Artists, Warhol and Soup

Subtitled “A scribbling of thoughts about Art“
There have been artist down through the centuries who could be classified as “starving artists”. They painted as the primary way of making money and supporting their habit of painting or sculpting. Today these days are long past. Today we have fast food employment.
Okay, so it’s not the most glamorous way of earning a few bucks for your next canvas, but it’s a start. I’ve never worked in a fast food restaurant myself, but I’ve heard plenty of stories. Good and bad. Mostly bad. Van Gogh sold …read more

Giza Pyramids via 3d

Giza Pyramids via 3d

I recently was digging around the web for artists and articles that caught my eye, and I thought this one was pretty cool. Tomorrow, I think I will try this technique with something around here. Apparently, the man who made the video just walked around the pyramids and took a picture every ten steps. He then compressed it into a time lapse movie and posted it online.
I love taking pictures and more recently, I’ve began getting into film-making (partly because we use movies every week at our church to illustrate different points). This a very …read more

Featured Artist – Ryan Petrow

Featured Artist – Ryan Petrow

When I first saw Ryan Petrow’s art, the first thing that I noticed were the lines, the quietly urban settings, and the colors which seem to elegantly express the personality of the scene as more than just a setting, but a world of people who desire something beyond themselves.
The watercolor painting here “South on Meridian” is one of Ryan’s more populated renderings, with few horizontal lines and many more verticals that characterize Ryan’s style. On a more curious note, throughout the immediately recognized vertical lines, a clear sense of direction and purpose accompanies many of his pieces through the line …read more
