A fun, cheap and personal Christmas gift idea, probably more on the crafts side than the arts side here.

In addition to blogging here at b5media I am also an associate pastor here in Newark, OH. Home of the worlds largest basket building and the Heisy Glass Museum, as well as the site of the prehistoric Indian mounds.

So anyway, back on topic… We are doing a special project with the youth group this coming Sunday. We have decided to make gifts for some of the older folks in our church on Sunday. The gift? Candles.

The week afterwards we will pay a visit to each of the folks we make a candle for and do some caroling and present them with their gift as well but Sunday night, we have to make the candles first. This involves time with the teens going through each of the steps to make a great looking candle that also smells great too. I have learned that Candle making is a great group project that can bring a family closer together during the holidays as well.

So my wife and I went out and bought a large case of Astrolite J50 container wax and a few choice scents and wicks locally. We are going with the 6″ medium zinc-cored wicks and 16oz mason jars for the containers. This combination should make a nice candle that throws a great scent throughout the holiday season. I’ll post an image of a finished candle when we get them made.

They even were gracious enough to let my wife know that she picked the wrong wicks for our candles that we wanted to make.
