Painting with Oil Pastels – Part I

It pretty much started with someone giving me this crappy old canvas board. I think something was once painted on it as part of a vbs set design. Anyway, you can see the old water damage and stains on it.

I thought, “it would be fun to just try something I haven’t done before on this.”

So I bought me some new (cheap) oil pastels and a little jar of turpenoid.

The subject for this is just that of my personal faith. I videotaped the children’s ministry this morning doing a version of the Christmas story and so I guess that was on my mind. This is also one of my old trademark drawings that I use to try new medias with too. The hand with the cross.

The first step was just getting the basics down. Okay I screwed up on the proportions a little here.

Laying down some base colors with the oil pastels.

Filling in some more details.

Here I used the turpenoid to give the painted look (brush strokes and all) You can see my paintbrush at the bottom of the photo here. This is not finished. Maybe one more day on this one.

to be continued…
