Artist Hideout News: Feeds and Submissions

I think I finally got all my feed related issues solved for this site (for anyone who may have experienced issues with them lately, thank you for your patience).
Also, I have had many submissions lately for artists who would like to be featured. If you are one of the lurkers (people who read but don’t comment), I’d love to hear from you, see your art and maybe even feature you here on Artist Hideout.
If you would like to be featured on Artist Hideout please see how you can submit your work here.
in short, come out of hiding…
Also, don’t …read more

Trading Art: Reliving the Fascinations of Trading Cards

Trading Art: Reliving the Fascinations of Trading Cards

When I was about 9, I used to enjoy trading baseball cards. Phrases come back to me of “I’ll trade my Jose Canseco Dream Team card for your Nolan Ryan?”. I must admit I was a big fan of Nolan Ryan. Baseball fanatics today don’t know the love of the game that once existed. I’m not old enough to know it at it’s peak, but I remember the enthusiasm I had opening up a brand new pack of Upper Deck baseball cards and going through them and sorting out the “commons”. There is something about …read more

Netsuke: Please touch my art.

Netsuke: Please touch my art.

A friend of mine recently was telling me about Netsuke (pronounced NET-SKAY) art. Apparently there is an animal that is representative of each person’s birth year. This Cocker Spaniel was carved by Netsuke artist-in-training, Nori Mimbu.
Netsuke is the art of taking each one of those animals and carving it. Apparently Netsukee has quite a following from Japan as well as other countries.
Morikami Museum just had a showing and an auction in Delray Beach featuring Netsuke carvings from these various artists as part of the International Netsuke Society Annual Convention which was held at Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Coconut Grove, just south …read more

How to continue Art when life happens… (asking for opinion on cars too)

How to continue Art when life happens… (asking for opinion on cars too)

It’s been a rough last two days. Car problems mostly. A few other things too.
I’ve been a little tied down in terms of actually getting to some paints lately or sitting down in front of a blank piece of paper to even draw a little.
I’ve come to realize that for me when life happens and I am having trouble just making the time to draw or paint that I can still really enjoy other art. Use it to form new ideas and plan future projects.
This comes from the essential statement that “all art isn’t something …read more

New Logo for this Site

New Logo for this Site

For awhile there’s been talk of new templates around b5. I have been frustrated with the colors around here being a little drab to say the least. So while thinking about a new color scheme, I decided to reinvent the logo too with the new colors.
I am pretty pleased with the results. But I’m not that objective really. So I thought I’d share it with you all here. Dan over at www.emptyeasel.com liked it. Since he had entered my uncontest I ran this by him last week to get some preliminary feedback.
So… …read more

Artistry in Music: Andy McKee

Artistry in Music: Andy McKee

Thanks to Aaron’s post (Where he thanks Dan Wilt) I followed the link to McKee’s site and found a link to some other videos on Youtube.
This one I particularly like. I play both hand percussion (which I am decent at) and guitar (though I am not near decent) , and this guy integrates the two nicely here. Thanks Aaron.

Proof that true artists are rarely satisfied with doing things the “normal” way.

Grand Opening: b5media Forums

Grand Opening: b5media Forums

You may not know this, but there is a whole community of bloggers that make up b5media. We all communicate behind the scenes with people like Darren Rowse, Jeremy Wright, Aaron Brazell and Christina Jones among others.
In short, it’s like our own little family of support for blogging each and every day. (We also waste a lot of time in the arcade there trying to beat each other’s scores on various games.) We also talk about Douglas Adams on occasion as we venture into determining the value of life among other things.

Design on the fly: Computers of the future.

Design on the fly: Computers of the future.

I can’t help but when I am watching this video (which I found thanks to Design Sojourn, a blog which I discovered earlier today) think how will this affect art in the coming years. Browsing through a collection of paintings will be a breeze compared with the programs we are currently using. I see scrap booking becoming a digital exercise played out with interactive elements for more than just memorabilia’s sake. Scrap booking is at it’s core is a cataloguing of images and story already. So here are some questions among others to ponder.
But what about …read more

Snapshots from a drive.

Snapshots from a drive.

My wife and I went for a nice little drive yesterday evening. Just on some local back roads of central Ohio. Saw a few deer and spotted some clouds. I thought I’d share. I did a little editing in Picasa to these.

This is Bob

This is Bob

Occasionally I get the urge to just post strange things here to see how many people tell me about it. I think the truth of some art is just to see if anyone is paying attention.
So, this is Bob.

Bob’s had a hard day. He’s not sure why it’s been hard. In fact Bob is probably going to go read one of these other blogs today. They are his personal favorites and Bob just can’t get enough.
Bob likes what he sees over at The Colorist, because its so… um…. colorful. Besides, Bob likes Van Gogh which they’ve been kinda on …read more
