b5media Artist Showcase
Tammy Powley over at Jewelry & Beading is gracious enough to host our showcase this month entitled “All Things New” where each of our b5 art and craft bloggers explore that theme.
I suggested the theme immediately after the new year. Partially because of the new year and looking at what I would do in the coming year, but also because of two other factors.
Beware: Pastor in me coming out below.
As an artist and more broadly, people, it’s easy to get caught up in the routine. Our routines can dig our own ruts and as an old guy in church once used to tell the joke, “a rut is just a grave with both ends knocked out”.
For me the theme also comes from scripture. Artists over the years have been motivated by the imagery and the stories of faith. As I am a Christian as well, I started off this year with a devotional based off of Revelation, chapter 21, verse 5 in which is said “I am making everything new!”
This is a major theme in my life, my faith. At times it seems like I am doing a juggling act. As a pastor, a husband to my wonderful wife, a writer, and an artist it can seem to get overwhelming. So even though I had decided to not make any new years resolutions, I finally decided to make one. To not live my life divided.
I think there is a value to all aspects of my life, including my art and writing that can benefit from opening each area and compartment of my life to the others.
So I’ll end this very uncharacteristic post on Artist Hideout with this thought. Live your life like a richly colored painting. Each color brilliantly spilling out over the edges of the canvas filling the eyes of the beholder with a longing, a joy, and a memory that cannot be tarnished by age, rust, or decay. Let not the moment escape you where you have not fully lived.
