Beginning Blender: Oh, My Blue Heart

So yesterday I began trying out the open-source animation tool, Blender. I played around with blender for a few hours and came to the conclusion that there are probably some good blogs and sites about Blender. In fact they are hard to miss when they are ranked number one on blogtopsites for the art section.

BlenderNation is who I turned to. They must be doing something right if they are ranked number one.

I ran across a tutorial that looked to be just my speed.

Creating a Heart in 10 Steps
Learn basic modeling, vertex manipulation and working with the viewports.

Here is my rendition of the heart in about five minutes of work.

my blue heart

Suddenly I am much encouraged that this is something I can learn. I’ve just modeled a heart. I guess valentines day is just around the corner…

Bender is great if you want to do animation. However if you would like to create small items or products, try http://www.rhino3d.com its interface is a lot easier to get around.

They have a trial version to see if it fits your need.

    Best of luck!

Well, I am trying to work my way into doing animation.
I have used Bryce3d quite a bit and still use it for for some of my other stuff. Thanks for the reference for Rhino 3d though. Do you use blender at all for animation yourself? I have some questions I’d like to ask someone who has worked with it a bit.

    Hi William,

I’ve played around with it when it first came out. Unfortunatly I gave up because my needs were more detail work and less animation. Sorry.
