At Artist Hideout, I’ve decided that an internet radio show would be the best way to put together some different types of interviews and content over the phone.
Here, you can listen to the most recent show.

Finding Value in Silence (for your creative self)

Finding Value in Silence (for your creative self)

I am increasingly becoming aware that we live in a culture that is fixated on noise. I am not sure exactly why this is. Perhaps it means that people always have something going on, that they don’t really want to look at who they really are as much as being defined by the things they surround themselves with? I really wish I knew.
One problem I find is that it’s almost impossible to find a place that is truly quiet.
I have talked with my wife about it numerous times and have determined that one day when we …read more

Canvas Cashed Out

Canvas Cashed Out

BBC reports that a canvas covered in 100,000 notes of 1000 kroner (about $16,300 USD) was stolen from an Oslo Art Gallery.
Each banknote was individually glued to the 6′5″ x 13′ canvas frame.
The thieves cut these individually off the canvas leaving only the frame behind.
While on one hand I am not sure whether to classify this as an art theft or not, it strikes me quite humorous when I read the statements next to the empty canvas frame (screencap below from the BBC article)

Working with Shades of Gray: Painting Fish 1

Working with Shades of Gray: Painting Fish 1

I was feeling slightly ambitious today (common Monday trait for me) and decided to start this painting this morning. I found the above image on www.sxc.hu
My camera seems to be acting up and is giving everything a pinkish hue so here is the best I could do in terms of showing you the current state of this painting. I had to do some post editing to even get this…. arghh.
My fore-shortening skills need a little work I am noticing. That is partly why I chose this subject for a painting. Also there is the factor of …read more

Starting a Artist Group

Starting a Artist Group

I’ve been searching around online for some really good Artists Groups, and much to my dismay, I haven’t found any decent ones. Now maybe it’s because I am looking in all the wrong places. I am not sure. But I have decided to create a Google group for artists to share ideas, techniques, tricks, and just do some basic networking. Groups offer a few features that blogs don’t. They aren’t hosted on any one persons site, and belong to the community more than they belong to any one person.
Plus, it’s just easier to have …read more

How to Find your Creative Process

How to Find your Creative Process

As I sit down to write this little post on finding your creative process, I realize how I have been slightly dreading to write this post. Not because it’s bad or that it’s a difficult process, but because I so often have trouble finding my own process myself. Some days it is so easy. It’s like I was born to paint. Then on some days it gets really hard, I get distracted, I end up doing other things rather than what I should be doing. Create.
Most artists in this day wear many hats. I am …read more

Any ideas on how to teach a first time internet user?

Any ideas on how to teach a first time internet user?

I’m going to go completely off of arts here and ask a question. Does anyone have any great resources on teaching a first time internet user how to use the internet?

My parents have recently signed up for Broadband Internet and it will probably pretty much come down to me teaching them how to use it. I’ve been thinking about putting together a series of screencasts to teach them the basics. Ultimately, I think my dad wants to get into blogging too. He would be great at it actually. But there is going to be a …read more

Using Allegory in your Work – I have a new painting to start…

Lately, I’ve been doing more reading that artwork. I am an avid reader. It’s been an obsession of mine most of my life. One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis among others.
I have found that there always seems to be an underlying allegory to his writing that hides just as much as it tells. For instance, in his book “The Great Divorce” he tells a story that is about a bus ride from Hell into Heaven. While there is a lot of spiritual talk and elements surrounding the story, there is a rich visual …read more

Redefining The Place of Art in Our Lives

Redefining The Place of Art in Our Lives

I have been thinking about what we perceive as art or not. Broadly, it is defined as “The product of human creativity”. I think I struggle a little bit with this definition. Going off of that, it would confuse innovation with art. Maybe innovation is an art?
You see there are creative things we do everyday. From figuring out how to drive, eat and talk on the cell phone at the same time while adjusting the radio knob, there is a certain amount of creativity present. (I used an example of one of my …read more

Lessons from Nature

Lessons from Nature

Around here it is beginning to thaw finally. Everything has been iced over completely for the last few weeks.
There seems to be a freshness in the air though there is still quite a bit of slush in the roads. There is hope that the freeze is over. People are happy as they are wearing lighter coats and getting out more.
Sometimes it’s like that with our art too. We go through phases of frozen inspiration. Dark times where the warmth doesn’t seem to come. Then we are inspired. Light breaks through and the …read more
