I love to sell a painting (who wouldn't ... what a boost for the ego!) and I get despondent when nothing sells (like for months now). But then I paint pretty much to suit myself, so I don't paint if I don't feel like it, I don't (and won't) take commissions because I have to paint MY way! No, I don't think that many artists can paint for a market without losing something. There is a lot of instantly recognisable work that I see that is popular at the moment and sells like hot cakes. But I could not produce such quantities on demand! It would be nice to be in demand, however! an age old question I think, William. Bread and butter....or art...hmmm. I notice that most of the art sold at auctions for millions of dollars is usually by some long ago and very deceased artist. So I tell my children, "Maybe someday after I'm dead you will reap some reward for my work." At least I hope so..if not monetary, I hope they will enjoy it for themselves. Art for art's sake does not, however, pay the bills. I struggle with this daily and wonder how to live with it. Thanks for your thoughtful reflection on the subject.
