Disney Sharpens it’s Pencils
o you remember what a pencil is Disney? Apparently, they do.
I am a fan of the new computer driven animation market, I’ve even tried my hand at it (very little). But there is something to be said for the good ol’ fashioned pencil-drawn animation of days gone by. Sure, there’s been tons of innovation in animation in the last twenty years but getting back to basics may be just the spur to lend itself to some new creativity in this field.
Disney much to it’s credit has always been a leader in the field of hand-drawn animation of days-gone-by. They developed many of the techniques that became the standard of animation from the early days. From stereophonic sound to Technicolor in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. From 1938 on, Disney was the leader in animation.
Two years into his era as CEO of Disney, Robert Iger is beginning to make some changes. And just one year after the Pixar merger, hand drawn animation is making a comeback .
I am eager to see what this really means. Pixar has been the major leader behind computer animation in the last decade and a major competitor for Disney. Now that both are together and hand drawn animation coming to the forefront again, there is a high likelihood that Disney will bring some new artists on board too. But if it will work may be another story. I am hopeful, even happily anticipating some new feature films in the coming years revolutionizing, yet again, the animation world.
