That tends to seal it tighter to the surface you are masking OR another trick that takes longer but definitely works is: apply your tape, burnish it, paint the over it edges with the color that's underneath and when that's dry, apply the paint color you want to show. That way if any paint sneaks under the tape's edge, it's the same color as the under paint. I know...a lot of extra work so it seems but it's pretty fool-proof.
