Hope this isn't too late to count for you, Kate. I wish I had more time to devote to art. I love being creative with crafts.

So, a comment here is a vote for Kate correct? Good. I like her take on art. I enjoyed her whole post and agree; I think art does make one reconsider, and imagine, and think other things are possible... Lots of stuff. How much and what we view does affect our world view. Good job Kate :)

Ah! I so meant to get in on this contest. Bah. Life has not cooperated. But I hope you get it, Kate! I enjoyed reading your take on art. Makes me think more about it's purpose in my own life.

So, does that mean that you're always looking at what's wrong in the world, unless you're seeing it through the lense of art?

Art is observation and interpretation. It is how someone sees the world. much like writing in fact. Is it just another way we try to mark our passage? I'll have to think about that one.

You say "art shows me the individual and the collective creation of a person, of a people, runs contrary to the dulling, the numbing of us." I agree that art can reflect the human race in a way that builds our understanding, and challenges our minds.

World Evils vs. Individual Creatism. It is so easy for us to gloss over the insanity in the world, for our own sanity, the everyday. I believe, even when morbid, art is optimistic. There has to be enthusiasm for the artist to be able to create. We can feel that enthusiasm, again, even when morbid. It is a wonderful retreat.

For me, it is an escape from life, life both mundane or horrifying or whatever. It is a place away from this world.

Are you saying that when you see art, is shows you the better side of humanity? Is there any particular painting or other piece of art that you feel particularly illustrates your point?

Of course, when you started talking about all the problems of the world, I thought of art that points to some of these problems.... such as Picasso's Guernica about the horrors of the Spanish civil war.
