Skulls, bones and other art
I recently received an email from a Mr. Dark who likes to draw bones and skulls. Besides my initial reaction of “hey, this is really good!” was the morbid factor which encompassed with the anatomical renderings of a Mr. Dark led me to the final conclusion of “hey, this is really good!”
Rendering the dead has long been a part of traditional art. Artists were employed by early doctors and scientists to make models, drawings and paintings of various skin diseases, maladies, and sicknesses as well as the eventual death of many of these patients, with autopsy drawings when …read more
Ashley Cecil: The Art Journalist
Ashley Cecil submitted this piece to me this last week. I’ve been spending some time looking at Ashley’s work on her site and have been quite surprised at the variety of work that she has done.
While much of Ashley’s work is journalistic in style, there is a definitive look to her painting which has the water color appeal even in her oil paintings. This is not a bad thing though, Ashley has remained very detailed while often working on smaller scales than traditional artists usually do. I prefer her larger images due to the outstanding detail and color that is …read more

Scott Engel: Fly by Night
Digital painting of photographs has really taken a leap in the last few years thanks to artists like Scott Engel.
Scott says this about this particular piece. “Fly By Night”
I was out photographing in Simmons Woods Park, in Pewaukee, Wisconsin around Halloween last year, when I was inspired by the near-dusk flight of some geese. Having taken notice of the moon, I wondered what it would be like to see those geese flying across the face of the moon. So I photographed the geese and the tree, then followed it up with the picture of the moon. In Photoshop, I enlarged …read more

Artist: Sarah Francesca Fischer
Intoxicated by joy is probably the best phrase that I can use when reading Sarah’s blog, writings and looking at her artwork. The passion, joy, and the surprise are evident in her work. I’d almost use the term “play” instead.
My artistic style I used to pen as “stream of consciousness flow” ..now, however I’d call it “spontaneous voice.”
I cringe far less than I used to. I still trip everywhere I go. I’ve given up trying to walk straight let alone bump up against people. Cause these days there’s far less bruising and more enjoyable cruising. ~from Sarah’s email …read more

Josh Simpson: A Megaplanet Apart
I am partial to glass artists. They can take something that is so solid and so lasting, melt it down into molten lava-like substances and fashion it into something beautiful. Dale Chihuly is the name that most people think of when they hear of glass art. Lately for me, it’s been Josh Simpson.
Josh has a very unique style to his art. Surprisingly, it seems to be very detail oriented. Entire worlds fill up the space in each of his planets. You can almost imagine little dolphins swimming beneath the surface. But Josh …read more
Dale Chihuly – New York Botanical Garden
Dale Chihuly is one of my personal favorite Artists not just because of the colors or the media he uses, but because his passion for the media. I found this video over on Google that really shows off some of the amazing work he does. I had the chance to see some of his work during the Chihuly over Venice exhibit once and I will forever be captivated by this amazing artist.

Rembrandt has Warts!
I just received my issue of Smithsonian today and was pleasantly surprised with a great article of Rembrandt. If you happen to be waiting in a doctors office in the next few days you might want to check it out. Other than that, we don’t keep the heat on down here at the church building on throughout the week to save money, so it’s really cold in the office… brrrr…
The article really brought to light something I didn’t think about before. This is that Rembrandt saw the beauty in the everyday people. Though he was commissioned …read more

Angela Rockett explores the Inner Landscapes
Looking at the digital versions of Angela Rockett’s work makes me want to travel out to Bothell, Washington to see her paintings for myself. The rich hues of color explore an inner depth that is mesmerizing to look at and experience. The title of her most recent show at the VU Gallery, “Inner Landscapes” seems to be a fitting reminder of the expressions that Art really can portray about who we are… inside.
Angela reveals a hidden depth in her work that incorporates “found elements” bringing the world of collage and paint into a single medium that infuses the synergy of …read more
