Metals in Green – The process

Metals in Green – The process

I get ideas and then when I actually get to work on a particular painting, it’s usually around midnight or something. So yesterday evening I bought a 36″x48″ canvas and began work.

Most of my work lacks a really warm feel, so I started with a green field and incorporated a copper metallic and a pewter metallic paint into the green with a bright orange that faded throughout to give it more warmth.

Pardon the crappy image, but my camera is on the fritz again. Hopefully my cell phone image above gives you more of the look that the background …read more

Playing with Illustration and Texture

Playing with Illustration and Texture

Rarely does my own artwork become an exercise in illustration, so I must confess that it is with some reluctance that I share the following work in progress.
Also, I mainly must classify my own personal artwork as abstract expressionism, so bear that in mind too. I think it’s because I like to complete a work in one sitting most of the time. I also am experimenting a bit with texture here as you can see below.
Media is currently only Ink and Watercolor Pencils on Bristol Board.
Starting with some detail shots….

this is the full work as …read more

Take part in the “Artist Hideout Challenge”

Take part in the “Artist Hideout Challenge”

I recently hit on the idea to make a digital artwork that was the same width and posting requirements for my blog. One that was rendered specifically for the space but you had to scroll to get the full image. I hadn’t seen anything like this anywhere else. With that in mind, I am opening up the Artist Hideout Challenge.
Make an artwork that fits these dimensions (400px x 1300px) using any theme or software that you prefer. Submit it here and I will post it for inclusion. Be sure to include the name of the software you used to create …read more

Final “Fumage #1″

Final “Fumage #1″

Here is a little bit more of a detailed shot.
I found that there are a few tricks when working with flame as a medium.
If you work with a candle, you have a likelihood of spilling wax on your work. Best plan is to work with a medium sized wooden match. Too little and you burn yourself. Too long and you risk charcoal over everything as well as bits of charred wood falling off in your work zone.
Even with a wooden match, you can get different colors. By holding the match at an angle and …read more

Fumage in Progress

Fumage in Progress

I’ve decided to blog photos of the fumage in progress here. The image quality on my cell is pretty decent so I am going to use that and upload to here through Flickr. Our digital camera is pretty much dead.
I am using Bristol Board, a new box of wood matches, and workable fixative for this project.

Introducing Fumage – I didn’t inhale

Introducing Fumage – I didn’t inhale

Among the various methods of creating art is a lone technique, called Fumage. Wikipedia tells us that it is surrealism, but I would probably classify it under a form of abstract. I’d say expressionism too, but that might be pushing it just a little.
This is probably categorized under “art forms that might burn your house down”
Fumage, quite simply is painting with smoke. WikiHow has a great little how to create your first fumage painting. Check it out for the low down on the how to. I am going to try it this week sometime …read more

The process of logo design.

The process of logo design.

Recently, I was given the opportunity of designing a logo for another b5media blog, Hockey Beat. I went through several revisions before I came to one that Mark and I both liked.
So listed below are a few of the revisions and the process I went through in designing this logo. Initially, I looked at Hockey Team logos.
Problem was they all look different. Someone in the NHL really needs to standardize logos!
The first step in this was to read the existing content on the blog. Luckily there was a little. This gave me an idea of what audience and feel that …read more

Designing a Comic Character is Hard

Designing a Comic Character is Hard

Over the last few days, I have been working on a comic idea to add to Artist Hideout. In fact I already seem to have the first few strips written in my mind, but I am having trouble with the art form that comic strip characters limit a person to.
I tend to over-draw things and comics are generally more minimalistic in form.
I intend for this to eventually become a daily or weekly feature of the site or a new blog if I can manage to bring it to a daily level of continuity. I have been thinking about doing this …read more

Carvewright wrong?

Carvewright wrong?

As I was browsing through the woodworking tools at my local Sears store, I happened across the Carvewright. Branded as the CompuCarve for Sears

While this is a pretty cool concept the reviews for the Carvewright don’t seem to speak so well for it. At $1,800, well… I’d rather have something that works for a long period.
Check out some of the images from the carvewright site below:

While I love the concept of being able to take a graphic design and import the image and carve it in 3d within the space of a few minutes, I am not …read more
