A thousand sketches in one year on a Tablet PC by Walter Logeman

A thousand sketches in one year on a Tablet PC by Walter Logeman

I’ve been watching Walter’s site for the last month or so and have been really impressed. In fact, it’s made me want a tablet pc.
It’s a project to create 1000 sketches in a year on a tablet pc. So far, he’s at 404. Pretty good if you ask me. His subjects range far and wide between everything from architecture to horses to abstract.
Well worth a visit. It’s an ambitious project.

Living the Artist’s Life (management skills need improving)

Living the Artist’s Life (management skills need improving)

As an artist, I find that there are times that I need to set aside particular time for projects. With my web responsibilities seemingly growing everyday and the fact that I suffer the artists curse of absolutely horrible time management skills, I’ve decided that I need to begin to take action on this particular area of life. I know what to do and I know what works for me, but I haven’t really set out a defined game plan to make it happen. I don’t really feel qualified to contribute to Jeremy’s life management series, but there …read more

It’s Not Easy Being Green

It’s Not Easy Being Green

Well, it’s that time of the year, where you paint yourself green, eat your Lucky Charms and look for four leaf clovers.
Well maybe not, but I still enjoy this picture of a guy from my church portraying Shrek.
But the Arts and Design channel here at b5media is going green for the day.

Help Save a Historic House from Destruction – 3 days left

Help Save a Historic House from Destruction – 3 days left

There is a house here locally by the name of the Captain Scott House. It’s an amazing house. I’ve always been very impressed with the architecture and the beauty of this amazing house. Now the house is facing destruction if enough money is not raised to move it. Visit www.captainscotthouse.org on how you can help save this historic monument.

The wide appeal of the project has mainly to do with the home itself, said Herring. “I am constantly meeting people who say ‘I’ve always loved that house!’” Last week, a family who wishes to remain anonymous stepped forward with a $10,000 …read more

Working with Shades of Gray: Painting Fish 1

Working with Shades of Gray: Painting Fish 1

I was feeling slightly ambitious today (common Monday trait for me) and decided to start this painting this morning. I found the above image on www.sxc.hu
My camera seems to be acting up and is giving everything a pinkish hue so here is the best I could do in terms of showing you the current state of this painting. I had to do some post editing to even get this…. arghh.
My fore-shortening skills need a little work I am noticing. That is partly why I chose this subject for a painting. Also there is the factor of …read more

How to Find your Creative Process

How to Find your Creative Process

As I sit down to write this little post on finding your creative process, I realize how I have been slightly dreading to write this post. Not because it’s bad or that it’s a difficult process, but because I so often have trouble finding my own process myself. Some days it is so easy. It’s like I was born to paint. Then on some days it gets really hard, I get distracted, I end up doing other things rather than what I should be doing. Create.
Most artists in this day wear many hats. I am …read more

Using Allegory in your Work – I have a new painting to start…

Lately, I’ve been doing more reading that artwork. I am an avid reader. It’s been an obsession of mine most of my life. One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis among others.
I have found that there always seems to be an underlying allegory to his writing that hides just as much as it tells. For instance, in his book “The Great Divorce” he tells a story that is about a bus ride from Hell into Heaven. While there is a lot of spiritual talk and elements surrounding the story, there is a rich visual …read more

Redefining The Place of Art in Our Lives

Redefining The Place of Art in Our Lives

I have been thinking about what we perceive as art or not. Broadly, it is defined as “The product of human creativity”. I think I struggle a little bit with this definition. Going off of that, it would confuse innovation with art. Maybe innovation is an art?
You see there are creative things we do everyday. From figuring out how to drive, eat and talk on the cell phone at the same time while adjusting the radio knob, there is a certain amount of creativity present. (I used an example of one of my …read more

Freaking Happy Trees

Freaking Happy Trees

I just realized that you can watch old Bob Ross videos on Google Video. Yeah, I know.. there is a controversy over his methods and the way he taught them. But, at the same time I have been amazed at the simplicity of his work as well as the passion that he displayed for painting.
While on one hand there are some issues with the exact duplication of his methods, there is the obvious factor that some of his techniques can be applied to other types of painting too and other realms of art.
I thought it was a …read more

So much for global warming.

So much for global warming.

After spending about 45 minutes getting ice off the car we pushed it free from its bed of ice this morning. It’s been a fun morning battling the ice and snow. I enjoyed getting out and taking a few images of the ice covered bush near our apartment though. I have found that taking loads of pictures is a good way to work with composition without actually getting the paints out. You can do it on the fly and make yourself a better artist through practice.
You might even become a better photographer in the meantime. …read more
