Talk 01 - Art is a “Real Job”

by William Lehman on March 12th, 2007

You do art for a living?time-clock

There is a misconception that artists are not really “working” in our culture. I am not sure why this is other than the fact that art has been taken for granted for so long and some have become oblivious to the nature of the work that we do.

Bloggers face the same thing on occasion.

So how is our job of an artist represented to our friends and family?

Stay-at-home moms are eating bon-bons and watching soaps.

Bloggers are leeching off main stream media, cat blogging, navel gazing, noodle blogging.

And artists are lazy bums who can’t be bothered to get a real job.

    :D :D :D

You know I’m kidding. Artists are fascinating and have a very important part in society’s psyche. Without art, our lives would be colorless and as dead as cardboard.

    Love ya!

wow, I freaked before I read who sent that….lol

that little message at the end may get misconstrued by my main stream leeching, cat-blogging wife who likes to navel gaze.

I’d edit it, but I’m just so dang lazy.

I don’t know about other artists, but I know I work about 3 x harder than most people most of the time. It’s required in the art field. And other responsibilities and needs for finances don’t let up. The hardest thing is that so many people think art is just play and that it’s okay for artists to be paid less than others because they get some job satisfactions other jobs don’t offer

If art went away, it wouldn’t just be a duller world, it would be a non-world. Have you ever seen anything designed by someone with no clue re: design? It’s either boring or unworkable and half the problems don’t get solved along the way.
