Empty Easel and Art Blogs
Dan from over at Empty Easel emailed me last night (or early this morning) to share the launch of Empty Easel. I thought this was a great blog and looks to be a great daily read. Thanks Dan.
While Art blogs are fairly new to the blogosphere, they have been popping up a lot more recently. Like here here and over here too. It’s great to see the culture that art blogs are bringing to the art community and the blogosphere (couldn’t we have come up with a better name for it?). Right now I think we classify as some kind of subcultural art community, but I think that is about to change.
Many of us art bloggers are artists as well. We have only just embraced the new medium that is afforded us for promoting and writing about our art. Some of us are like me who have no formal art training unless you want to count high school (which for me was 3 amazing artists with masters in Art who taught HS art in the meantime to support themselves). The other ones joing this emerging art community have the training and more of the knowedge that comes from books and degrees and things. These elements are combining in new and amazing ways through blogs.
Blogs have allowed the unknowns to step up and have a gallery in which the very well known artists can come and comment on and advise, help and sometimes even learn from the unknowns. The other way around also works. We can now interact directly with the artists we admire, influencing their work. In this way Art becomes not just a personal thing, but a cultural phenomenon that is shaping and building art as something that is born out of community, rather than just the shallow wells of creativity we can be when left to our own devices.
Since we are the pioneers of this, lets set the stage for a community that is not based out of competition but is based on the community of Artists who revel in shared creativty, helping one another out and bridging the gap between the outsiders and insiders.

I agree … I don’t know how I would continue without the Art Blogging world! It is wonderful to be able to look at other people’s work, read about their thoughts and processes and, above all, be able to communicate with them directly.
I have ‘met’ some wonderful artists since starting my blog eleven months ago. Like you I have had no real formal art education since high school, so being able to enter this world of ’shared creativity’ is helping me both to develop as an artist and to encourage others in their endeavour.

I concur. While i maintain a portfolio website, having a blog acts as a showcase for experimental work, recent updates to my portfolio, sketches as they develop for nascent pieces, and an arena for criticism which is often invaluable in the production of my work.
To the Art-blog.
Cheers,
