Artist Hideout

How to become a successful ebay artist.

by William Lehman on July 2nd, 2007

I’ve tried to sell artwork via ebay before and never really had much success at it, but some people do. What do they do and how do they do it? That’s what this second edition of the Artist Hideout video podcast is about.

At present, I only have this available as an mp4 file so you will need either iTunes or a compatible player to open it. (because Google is encountering an error)

Thanks for the info and podcast on the subject!
I have often wondered selling artwork on ebay and how profitable it would be. I have been running an ebay store for my boss the past couple months and it has been an interesting experience.
I have not even thought about selling my artwork on ebay since I have been running the store and you reawakened that curiosity in me again.
looking forward to seeing how well you do with your artwork!
Don’t miss the Boston Mills Artfest this weekend if you get the chance. I went last weekend and it’s always a nice little artfest.
Have you looked at selling your work on http://www.etsy.com possibly?

    Hey Chris,
Thanks, I wasn’t sure if anyone even watched it…lol

What I have seen on ebay recently has been a phenomenal increase in sales for artwork, particularly in the abstract expressionism category.

Most of these artists sell between 2-3 works a day on ebay in the 100-300 dollar price range.

So right around 26,000 a year doing this. Granted, I think many of them are relisted till they get the price, but the turn around time on these is pretty good.

I’ve heard a lot about etsy, but never really looked into it.

Thanks for stopping by Chris, I notice you are a d80 user, have you tried the d40x? how do they compare to you?

    William,
Yeah I have been watching lately on ebay and I notice a lot of the same artists that are selling their work consistently have their listings pretty close to the front of the line so to speak. I noticed your painting is listed 6 pages back for the abstract paintings. I am still trying to learn how to get listings in the first couple pages. It’s different for ebay stores and I found out that searching for particular text in listings that are using HTML from your own website or server you can’t search for in ebay. Something to keep in mind when listing items. My boss is not happy with that fact.

My buddy Randy is the one that uses the D80 and I have used a D70 in the past on the job. I have not tried the D40x but I know they are similar just not all the features if I’m not mistaken. I have an older Olympus E20 and some day I will break down and buy a new camera!
The ebay store I work on has items from a camera store buyout in case your interested. It’s http://www.nuttybugblowout.com.
