Introducing Fumage - I didn’t inhale

by William Lehman on May 5th, 2007

Among the various methods of creating art is a lone technique, called Fumage. Wikipedia tells us that it is surrealism, but I would probably classify it under a form of abstract. I’d say expressionism too, but that might be pushing it just a little.

This is probably categorized under “art forms that might burn your house down”

Fumage, quite simply is painting with smoke. WikiHow has a great little how to create your first fumage painting. Check it out for the low down on the how to. I am going to try it this week sometime and I thought that some other people might like to try it with me. Have a little gallery day here of Fumage on Friday, May 11th. Feel free to post the great, the good, the bad and the ugly experiences you get with almost lighting your paper or self on fire.

Oh and if you need some examples check out the links below I found at Wikipedia.

This is a blast! There are so many ways to exercise creative expression. And I love the way you categorized it under “art forms that might burn your house down.”

When you mentioned setting things on fire I remembered an artist who used to deliberately set his paintings on fire with lighter fluid to get certain effects with the paint. I described it in my article here, http://www.energiesofcreation.com/paintings/creativity-and-fear-of-failure/ if flammable art processes excite you, ha!

I will check back later and see what everyone did with the fumage.

This technique can definitely burn your house down, so do be very careful. I always have a fire extinguisher handy, and I work with a mask and ventilation.

I have enjoyed browsing both of your sites. I’m glad you liked the post here on Fumage. I was really impressed with the way that it worked with pastels creating a very colorful work.

I also will be adding both your links to my blogroll. ;)
