Lost and Found: Motivation and Sunshine
Have you ever started a drawing or project and you came to a stopping point for the day, you clean up, and plan to come back to it tomorrow, the next day comes, but the enthusiasm that you had for the project has somehow waned throughout the night?
This happens to me a lot.
So now I have a new dilemma.
Do I
a.) work on the project that I really don’t feel like doing now.
b.) Put it aside for later, hoping the inspiration returns and work on something else.
c.) keep it on the drawing table, constantly reminding me that it’s not done.
Once you start working on a project for the very first time, it’s easy to get caught up in it. You are energized and excited by it. But by the time tomorrow comes, it is often a little hard to get that same kind of energy flowing into your work that you originally had.
I am having that issue right now with a pencil drawing I am working on of a bear. I have him all sketched out, and now I must go in and add some details and finalize the proportions. I am having trouble getting motivated. On the other hand, it’s a beautiful day outside, and maybe that’s my problem. Being cooped up and feeling chained to my computer and drawing table is starting to get to me.
If I was a plant right now, I’d die from lack of sunshine.

When I lose inspiration for a project, it’s usually because I realize my technical ability is not advanced enough…YET. If it’s a great idea, I’ll just wait, continue to sketch, gain the skills I need, and execute when I’m ready. If the idea is weak, I’ll try to finish it anyway.
One thing I’ve learned: to finish is to grow.
