Natalie Green: Wildlife Artist

by William Lehman on January 12th, 2007

Natalie recently submitted her work entitled “Mohrr Gazelles-Sahar Oasis”

Gazelles

I think what initially captures my eye in this is the detail of the landscape surrounding the gazelles. It’s not glamorized as a tropical paradise or anything. It comes across very real and authenticly wild. I think that is an element that is hard to capture effectively.

There is a snapshot quality that is present in this piece though. But for something so well done, I won’t argue against this technique being used. It accentuates the gazelles and their natural environment very well here. The lighting is also fascinating. The dark foreboding element of the tree also serves as the shade of the day while clouds dance above leaving their fleeting shadows on the ground behind.

I would like to see some of your images evolve into camouflage art though too (Bev Doolittle). The kid (is that the proper terminology for a baby gazelle?) blends into the color of the ground so well, you can tell that there is an element of natural camouflage going on.

From your site it looks as though this piece has been donated.

Natalie has donated a painting, titled “Mohrr Gazelles-Sahar Oasis” to Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre, to support their efforts to raise funds for the care, feeding, and eventual release of their animals back to their natural habitat. She is currently a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, BC Wildlife Federation, and Ducks Unlimited, because she supports their conservation efforts. She donates her work to each of their fund raisers, as well as to fund raisers for organizations such as the PARDS Therapeutic Riding Association, the Alberta Conservation Association, and the Creston Wildlife Centre.

My personal favorites of Natalie’s work can be found on her website entitled “A Call to Arms” and “Sneaking”

Thank You Natalie for your submission.

Thank you William for your kind review. I did donate it to Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre; this painting was done specifically for them. At the time I was at the Centre, they were preparing to release the specific gazelles I painted to a wildlife reserve in the United Arab Emirates.

The landscape is where they were originally from (they are extinct in the wild at this point in time). I also learned that it is very important to research your animals, because when I first started the painting, I was going to put them into the African savannah–exactly the wrong environment!!

Natalie Green is one of my personal favourite artists and a regular contributor to BC Wildlife Federation fundraising efforts.
I like her work so much that I recently purchased one of her paintings, a Rufus Hummingbird, as an 80th birthday gift for my mother who is fascinated by hummingbirds of all types.
Natalie’s work continues to evolve and I predict that she will be one of the forefront painters of her era before too much more time has passed.
I encourage you all to check out her website and buy now, because her art is going to be very collectible — and therefore pricey — in the not too distant future.
