Redefining The Place of Art in Our Lives
I have been thinking about what we perceive as art or not. Broadly, it is defined as “The product of human creativity”. I think I struggle a little bit with this definition. Going off of that, it would confuse innovation with art. Maybe innovation is an art?
You see there are creative things we do everyday. From figuring out how to drive, eat and talk on the cell phone at the same time while adjusting the radio knob, there is a certain amount of creativity present. (I used an example of one of my personal pet peeves).
So how should the average person perceive art based off of this definition? Would it matter if anyone liked it or not? Would it matter if anyone even ever saw it?
I think there is a great value in flexing our creative muscles in a tangible way and redefining our environment with innovative approaches. I can live with that as art. But I think the artist must learn not only to see the extraordinary as art but to see the beauty of the seemingly mundane things.
So as a muse today, look at the architecture of the buildings on your street. Notice the styles that were prevalent in the day that those buildings were constructed. Think about the things we have gained or lost since then.

No architecture on my street, William. I live too far out in the country for that. matter of fact, i don’t see one building off of my property.
Back on topic, I am currently getting into Italian architecture, as you can see at my blog. It is difficult to draw a beautifully made building, and not feel I am “stealing” from the architect.
I once thought of art as defined this way; “art is evocative.” It may not be a complete definition, but it serves well in part.

I’ve been reading your recent Van Gogh articles over the last month or so. I am not sure how you are putting your website address in the box when you submit something, but it’s not working properly. I thought I’d let you know. An option for you might just be to include it at the bottom of your post as a link.

art is pretty much all of the things you are wondering about. it’s about new thoughts, creativity, innovation. it’s about personal reflection, and caring about the common good as well.
