Scott Engel: Fly by Night
Digital painting of photographs has really taken a leap in the last few years thanks to artists like Scott Engel.

I was out photographing in Simmons Woods Park, in Pewaukee, Wisconsin around Halloween last year, when I was inspired by the near-dusk flight of some geese. Having taken notice of the moon, I wondered what it would be like to see those geese flying across the face of the moon. So I photographed the geese and the tree, then followed it up with the picture of the moon. In Photoshop, I enlarged the moon and then combined the elements together.
This is one of those pieces that captures the emotive element with lots of space and very little actual content. Colors remain cool to capture the solitude of the work.
My favorite image of Scott’s is Moonscape, found in his nature gallery. Scott has great ability to capture the light of a place and retain it digitally throughout the work. Although his nature photography really captures my eye, Scott’s mechanical work is also very good (machines). While in nature, entire landscapes or particular elements are focused upon, in his mechanical work, it is the little details of things that come to the forefront. This shift in perspective takes place almost too naturally for Scott but that kind of natural range would be fun to play with combining machines in nature. I would keep an eye on Scott in the coming years. He has the talent and the drive to go very far.
